SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — People ducked under desks and tables in California and other earthquake-prone areas around the world for an annual drill held Thursday to practice ways to stay safe during quakes.Up and down the U.S. West Coast, the ShakeOut drill began at 10:19 a.m. PDT with a test alert from the region's ShakeAlert earthquake warning system that popped onto cellphone screens. For many, it was the second alert of the day after an errant predawn message hit some phones with a voice message announcing the test. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was likely due to a mix-up in time zones set in the test alert system. The real thing happened a day earlier, however, when a magnitude 4.2 quake struck southwest of California's capital in the agricultural Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta region. The tremor triggered a warning from the ShakeAlert system, which detects the start of a quake and sends warnings to areas expected to experience shaking. The quake proved to be weaker than ...

Kurtenbach: The Warriors’ ‘dress rehearsal’ showed the same problems that plagued last season’s team

The Warriors wanted Wednesday’s preseason game against the Kings to be a dress rehearsal for the fast-approaching regular-season.All it showed was that this team might need more practice time. The Warriors coaches have prioritized two areas for improvement this preseason: limiting turnovers and defending without fouling.Against the Kings, the Warriors were unable to do either. The Warriors turned the ball over 22 times against the Kings, leading to 22 Sacramento points Wednesday. And after a solid first half, the Warriors also put the Kings on the free-throw line 22 times in the second half — a huge component of Sacramento’s 18-point late-third-quarter lead. It’s inauspicious stuff from the Dubs, to say the least.Related ArticlesGolden State Warriors | Lacob expects ‘tremendous ovation’ from Warriors fans upon Durant return Golden State Warriors | Steph Curry hits game-winning 3 in Warriors’ preseason win over Kings Gol...

By Matthew Perrone | Associated PressWASHINGTON — With the growing popularity of disposable e-cigarettes, communities across the U.S. are confronting a new vaping problem: how to safely get rid of millions of small, battery-powered devices that are considered hazardous waste. For years, the debate surrounding vaping largely centered on its risks for high school and middle school students enticed by flavors like gummy bear, lemonade and watermelon. But the recent shift toward e-cigarettes that can’t be refilled has created a new environmental dilemma. The devices, which contain nicotine, lithium and other metals, cannot be reused or recycled. Under federal environmental law, they also aren’t supposed to go in the trash.U.S. teens and adults are buying roughly 12 million disposable vapes per month. With little federal guidance, local officials are finding their own ways to dispose of e-cigarettes collected from schools, colleges, vape shops and other sites.“We are in a...
