Gasoline Has Its Own Upstream Emissions

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:59:19 GMT

Most of the electricity used to power battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is generated by power plants that burn fossil fuels, producing upstream greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. When ordinary people estimate the environmental impact of the various light duty powertrains, many assume that the upstream emissions created by BEVs are roughly equivalent to the tailpipe emissions of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Experts who carefully quantify vehicle emissions disagree with this intuitive misconception, which grossly underestimates the extraordinary volume of ICEV tailpipe emissions and fails to account for the significant upstream emissions associated with the production and distribution of gasoline. Before a gallon of gas is pumped into an ICEV’s tank, it has already generated a sizable quantity of carbon dioxide. The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is a highly respected authority on the decarbonization of the transportation se...

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Everton moved four points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone by beating Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday for a third straight win.The latest victory may not have had the flourish of Thursday’s 3-0 triumph over Newcastle at Goodison Park when the hosts scored all of their goals in the last 11 minutes, but the manner of victory would have been no less pleasing to Everton manager Sean Dyche.Having kept Chelsea at bay relatively comfortably, Everton struck through Abdoulaye Doucoure in the 54th minute and substitute Lewis Dobbin drilled home his first Premier League goal in stoppage time as Dyche’s team continued its recovery from a 10-point deduction for financial mismanagement.Chelsea had 71% possession but familiar failings up front cost the visitors, who have now won just twice in eight league games. One downside to the afternoon for Everton was fifth bookings of the season for defender Jarrad Branthwaite and midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who w...

NICE, France (AP) — Ivory Coast forward Jeremie Boga scored the winner as Nice beat Reims 2-1 to take back second place in the French league on Sunday. Boga picked his spot from 18 yards to unleash a low strike that Reims goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf palmed into his own net in the 82nd minute. Nice is known for patiently probing for an opening by swapping passes in its own half. But goalkeeper Marcin Bulka diverted from the script with a long punt in the 55th. The Reims defense cleared the ball into the path of Gaetan Laborde, who drove forward to open the scoring for Nice with a shot off the underside of the bar. Reims captain Yunis Abdelhamid met a cross from Junya Ito to equalize with a downward header in the 78th. Ito also hit the woodwork with an effort in the 67th. “I think we were a bit too excited sometimes,” Nice center back Dante told Amazon Prime Video. “We will have to correct that for the next games so that we can have more control.” Nice has built its success on a solid de...
