Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass signed a $13 billion city budget Friday, with an emphasis on homelessness initiatives and police funding. Before signing the 2023-2024 budget, Bass highlighted the $1.3 billion that is planned for homelessness, calling the allocations an “investment,” as opposed to “spending.”“This budget makes investments to bring people inside, in public safety and in other areas that will net a return in terms of lives saved, in terms of the quality of life… and it will save the city money in the long run,” Bass said in a press conference before officially signing the budget. “This budget charts a new course for a new Los Angeles.”The “Inside Safe” program will be the beneficiary of $250 million, which would purchase hotels and motels for temporary housing, transitions to permanent housing, provide rental assistance and other support services.More than $3 billion of the budget will be allocated to police...

They’re having fun in their resilience! They’re real life best friends who are so deeply different but yet so intensely connected and create insanely insatiable music rooted in deep vulnerability. Sonically it’s an explosion of EVERYTHING and embodiment of true judgment free zone.”The tune does see the outfit seamlessly bounce between hip-hop, pop, funk and EDM. The result is a joyful, ‘rude-heavy ditty.Meanwhile, the video has them moving between a tiled white room and some sort of parking str...

Can ‘social housing’ help solve California’s housing crisis?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:15:43 GMT

Over the past half-decade, California lawmakers have signed off on almost a hundred laws seeking to alleviate the state’s deepening housing crisis. Yet developers still aren’t building anywhere near enough affordably priced homes for everyone who needs them. Now, a state assemblymember from San Jose is pushing a novel proposal he believes could finally jump-start affordable housing development by allowing the state government to get into the homebuilding business.Alex Lee, a 27-year-old Democrat, has written a bill that would create a state agency to develop “social housing” — publicly owned housing that would be affordable for people with a range of income levels. While skeptics may dismiss the idea as a progressive pipe dream doomed to repeat the failures of underfunded federal public housing programs, Lee points out that California agencies already hire developers to build housing at universities and other public property across the state.“Wouldn...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:15:43 GMT

DENVER (AP) — Gone, but never forgotten, the ABA is enjoying a curtain call this season — all thanks to the Denver Nuggets.Nearly 50 years after the breakup of the old, renegade league, with its red-white-and-blue basketballs and the 3-point arc that has redefined the modern game, the Nuggets finally broke through to become the last of the four ABA teams — Spurs, Pacers, Nets and Nuggets — who survived the 1976 merger to make the NBA Finals. Denver hosts Miami in Game 1 on Thursday. One of the nicest compliments those old ABA Nuggets can pay to today’s group: These Nuggets remind them of them. “The new NBA is like the old ABA,” David Thompson, ‘The Skywalker,’ told The Associated Press in a phone interview from his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. “This Nuggets team, we’re pulling for them. I want them to finish the job that we didn’t quite get done.”Thompson’s career with the Nuggets straddled their ABA and NBA days. He is such a fan of the modern-day Nuggets that a si...
