SAN FRANCISCO — Shortly after the Warriors were awarded a WNBA franchise, Joe Lacob couldn’t help but reference the same promise he made to Warriors fans when he bought the NBA franchise in 2010.“I am telling you right now, we will win a WNBA championship in the first five years of this franchise,” Lacob said Thursday.Patience is not a word often used in describing Lacob. That’s clear with his bold goal of turning a team building a roster from scratch into a title-winning team in five years. But when it comes to his pursuit of bringing a WNBA team to the Bay Area, that’s exactly what he demonstrated, former Warriors president Rick Welts said. The Warriors on two occasions tried to bring a team to Northern California — in 2013 when the Los Angeles Sparks’ future was uncertain and in 2017 when the San Antonio Stars, now the Las Vegas Aces, were up for sale. The timing wasn’t right in either instance, Lacob concluded. But now, with the pand...San Francisco clerk murdered by man who stole 2 cans of beer, prosecutors say

Yohannes "John" Tewolde, 60, confronted De La Rosa with the bat in an attempt to stop him from shoplifting, but the beer thief gained control of the weapon, police said. After the beating, De La Rosa retrieved one of the beers he had tried to steal previously and threw the bat at a second victim in the store, according to the District Attorney's Office. He evaded arrest by fleeing in a getaway car driven by accomplice, prosecutors said. Tewolde died in a hospital five days later. De La Rosa was arrested on September 12. This week, prosecutors charged De La Rosa with murder, second-degree robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon."I would like...12-year-old bicyclist taken to hospital after being struck by car in Brentwood

US regulators seek to compel Elon Musk to testify in their investigation of his Twitter acquisition

LYON, France (AP) — New Zealand overcame a sluggish start to beat Uruguay 73-0 in its final pool match at the Rugby World Cup on Thursday. But the All Blacks’ performance was less than the polished quarterfinal rehearsal they were hoping for.New Zealand took 20 minutes to score the first try of the match and for much of the first quarter was put under pressure by Uruguay, which rose to the occasion of the first official test match between the teams.“It was quite a tough test match, especially in the first half. We were made to really work for it,” All Blacks captain Sam Cane said. “In that first 20 minutes we showed some good composure and patience to not allow (errors) to creep in and we started getting some rewards.”The All Blacks recovered to score four tries in the second quarter and lead 26-0 by halftime. But they will look back on their shaky start with concern as they were often turned over at breakdowns by Uruguay and at times looked stretched in defense.Still, the All...Business Highlights: The economic threat of rising rates, a huge recall of air bag inflators

Since mid-summer, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note has steadily climbed, causing a spillover rise in other borrowing costs. The costs of mortgages, auto loans and credit card debt have all risen in response. The collective impact of higher rates across the economy could also weaken the government’s own finances.
