Labour hails ‘seismic’ victory over Scottish National Party in Rutherglen by-election LONDON — The Scottish Labour Party won a crushing victory over the Scottish National Party in a key by-election Friday morning, as the party eyes a wider revival at the next general election.Labour candidate Michael Shanks won 58.5 percent of the vote in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West contest, vastly outstripping the SNP’s 27.5 percent in a 20.4 percent swing since the last election. While Labour had been expected to re-take the seat — which they last held in 2017 — the margin of victory was notable. The by-election for the House of Commons seat was triggered after local MP Margaret Ferrier was forced out by constituents, following multiple COVID rule breaches in 2020 that sparked fury and saw her booted out of the SNP.Scottish Labour set their sights on the seat, as they seek to challenge SNP hegemony in Scotland. Labour were once-dominant in Scotland but have struggled under a succession of leaders to reverse SNP gains in their heartlands. Under current leader Anas Sar...

Missing San Diego Humane Society pets causes leadership shakeup in Arizona SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Humane Society is struggling to find out what happened to the 318 small animals they delivered to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Now, independent investigators have followed the route of the small creatures to a dead end to a Maricopa reptile shop.  “Our leading theory and most people’s leading theory is that these animals ended up as food for reptiles. The very fact that they were sent through an online reptile store called the 'Fertile Turtle' can lead nobody to any other conclusion, we hope it’s not the case, but it’s impossible to think otherwise,” said Gary Weitzman, the president of the San Diego Humane Society.   The Humane Society of Southern Arizona initially offered to help find homes for the 318 rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and rats, delighting the San Diego Humane Society. The animals were shipped out and the trail went cold and messages stopped. Raves popping up beneath San Diego freeways are ‘extremely dangerous’: CHP Now, the b...

Icy floodwaters burst through major dam in India’s northeast, killing at least 31 people NEW DELHI (AP) — A flood that burst through a major hydroelectric dam in India’s Himalayan northeast killed at least 31 people, officials said Friday, as ice-cold water swept through mountain towns, washing away houses and bridges and forcing thousands of people to leave their homes. The flood began shortly after midnight Wednesday, when a glacial lake high in the mountains overflowed after a heavy rainfall. The waters cracked open a 6-year-old dam that was the largest in the Indian state of Sikkim, and then cascaded through towns in the Lachan Valley below. It was the latest deadly flood to hit northeast India in a year of unusually heavy monsoon rains. Nearly 50 people died in flash floods and landslides in August in nearby Himachal Pradesh state, record rains in July killed more than 100 people over two weeks in northern India.A report compiled by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority in 2019 had identified Lhonak Lake as “highly vulnerable” to flooding that could ca...
